Berlusconi seeks IMF monitoring of Italy’s debt-reduction bid

INTERNATIONAL. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi requested international surveillance of his bid to cut the euro- region’s second-biggest debt, as his fraying coalition threatens Italian efforts to erect a wall against Europe’s debt crisis.

Berlusconi’s government asked the International Monetary Fund to periodically assess its debt-reduction progress, while rejecting an offer for financial assistance from the Washington- based lender, he told a press conference today at the Group of 20 summit in Cannes, France.

“It hasn’t been imposed, it was requested,” Berlusconi said. The IMF will carry out quarterly “certifications” of the euro region’s third-largest economy, he said, adding that the current sell-off of Italian debt is “a temporary trend” even as the nation’s borrowing costs surged to a new euro-era record.

Autodesk to offer new, free apps for 3D ‘makers’

Autodesk is hoping to bring 3-D printing and scanning to the masses.

On Monday, the San Rafael company will release two new free 3-D applications. One of them, dubbed 123D Catch, will allow users to create 3-D models of objects using photographs taken from a digital camera or even a camera phone. The other, 123D Make, provides tools to help users create models that can be laser cut from sheets of cardboard or other materials.

Both programs are targeting the growing number of individual consumers and entrepreneurs who want to design and manufacture their own products, said Autodesk CEO Carl Bass.

“We see a dramatic change going on in what people are doing,” Bass said at a press event in San Francisco on Thursday.

Damon’s Grill closures point out the risks of gift cards

When Damon’s Grill closed the last of its Ohio restaurants after a long slog through bankruptcy court, Bob McGuire of Middleburg Heights was one of many customers stuck with unused gift cards.

“I’d rather eat ribs than these cards,” he said.

Gift cards are packaged for convenience, but they pose risks for consumers an important point as we head into prime gift-card buying season.

Unbeknownst to consumers, stores can continue to sell gift cards even after they file for bankruptcy, as Damon’s did.

And bargain shoppers beware. Long after Damon’s shut the last of its chain-owned stores, resale sites that let consumers dump unused cards were still merrily hawking Damon’s Grill gift cards.

Does a Virtual Workforce Make Sense for Your Small Business?

Back in the day, being a small business owner was a bit simpler. You needed help getting things done so you went out and hired people, usually locally, to work for you. The idea of hiring a staff member on the other side of the country — or even the other side of the world — was pretty much unheard of.

But, as they say, “That was then; this is now.”

And from a small business owner’s perspective, now is so much better. Thanks to technological advances, global educational achievements, and a 21st-century mindset, we are no longer restricted to where we do business, or who we “hire” to help us get it done.

I’ve discussed the power of the cloud in a previous column.

Is this the start of a brutal new era of IR?

A chill wind blew across the union movement last night when Alan Joyce and the board of Qantas took the unprecedented step of grounding flights indefinitely and locking out the many thousands of staff who are currently negotiating awards.

It is a tactic rarely seen in Australia, and is reminiscent of Chris Corrigan and the waterfront and Rupert Murdoch a few decades ago when he locked out journalists in Britain for weeks in an attempt to crush, and starve, them into submission.

The move will have profound ramifications for industrial relations in this country.

For the many Australian companies that have been wanting to destroy unions for years, it will be an exciting ride.
