Several tax credits survive, but reduced

The Joint House/Senate Committee on Tax Credits gave final approval to the 2011 package of business tax credits, paving the way for an expedited vote in the House and Senate. The package is contained in HB 3672. Passage is expected. AOI supports the legislation.

The good news is that AOIs supported credit – the R&D Tax Credit – was saved. So was the Film and Video Tax Credit. The Business Energy Tax Credit was split into a series of smaller, more tailored credits (Renewable Energy Credit, Energy Conservation Credit, etc.). However, none of these credits were spared from budget realities.

The Joint Committee worked under a directive to reduce the price tag of many of the credits that were up for review. Nearly $38m in credits were reviewed this session.

As a result, the maximum R&D Credit per company was reduced from $2m to $1m. The

Kingsport-Bristol May retail sales collection up; US spending hits 20-month low

Local residents increased their spending during May at the same time that spending on the national level hit its weakest pace in 20 months.

The Commerce Department cited higher gas prices and unemployment as the reasons for weak consumer spending in its Monday report.

According to the data from the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University May’s sales tax collections for the Kingsport-Bristol Metropolitan Statistical Area were up 0.2 percent from April and were 4.7 percent higher than May last year.

May’s retail sales data was the third economic item for the month where the local economy outperformed the national economy. Local existing home sales prices and job creation were the other two.

According to Monday’s Commerce Department report incomes rose 0.3 percent for the second straight month.

Over at “Surviving and Thriving,” Donna Freedman recently blogged about her experience lending money to a friend. Her post resonated with me as I have had a similar experience. So while we talk a lot about different types of loans in the world of personal finance–be it car loans, mortgages or payday lenders–we often neglect to discuss one of the most common lending practices: the personal loan.

Shakespeare is quoted as saying, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be” and I’m inclined to agree with him. I’ve been on both sides of the coin and it’s not an easy situation to be in. Having borrowed $5,000 from my father to help fix up a newly purchased condo, there was always an undercurrent of judgment. Read more…

Being Performance-Managed Out To Pasture

It seems performance regimes are being misused in order to bypass age discrimination laws and to put the ‘oldies’ out to pasture.

Under the Human Rights Act 1993, it is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of age. The Employment Relations Act 2000 also prohibits age discrimination in relation to employment, by specifying certain types of conduct that will be discriminatory if done on the grounds of age, such as dismissal, detrimental treatment and refusal to provide the same terms / conditions of employment as other employees.

But despite this legislation, age discrimination is quickly becoming the most common form of discrimination and the decision of McAlister v Air New Zealand Ltd 2009 is just one of many cases to illustrate this. In
