Savings to Last 20+ Years

I came across this article bemoaning how U.S. life expectancies are decreasing as compared to the past and to other countries. The article emphasized the slide in health, noting that 34% of the American population is classified as obese. But I was surprised to learn that women and men at birth are expected to live 81 and 77 years, respectively. To risk stating the obvious, that’s a really long time for your savings to last.

Say you were to retire at 67, which is the earliest you can expect to earn full Social Security benefits (see here for more details). If you’re a guy, you can expect to live another 10 years. But don’t we all dream of retiring earlier? Plus, those stats are just for average ages: you could very well live past 90, which pushes your retirement period well past 20 years. I don

U-Haul plans to fight Johnson City over condemned property

Phoenix-based AMERCO Real Estate Co., U-Haul’s parent company, wants its downtown Johnson City business to stay right where it is, despite the city’s recent condemnation of the property.

“There’s not much the city can do that’s going to make us happy,” Joanne Fried, U-Haul International public relations director, said Monday. “We will fight the condemnation process. We don’t want this to go to court, but we’ve done this before.”

AMERCO President Carlos Vizcarra has talked with City Manager Pete Peterson and expressed his desire to stay at the current location and that remodeling work at the property was forthcoming, Fried said.

By far the most uncompromising group are tea-party supporters — 53 percent would not agree to a deal that does not fall in with their principles.

The poll also found 56 percent of Americans expect a deal by August 2nd, while 38 percent do not.

Meanwhile approval ratings for all government leader dropped. Pre Read more…

British Minister: American “Rightwing Nutters” Pose A Bigger Threat Than The Eurozone Crisis

Vince Cable, the business secretary for the UK government, says “Rightwing Nutters” in the US pose a a bigger threat to the global economy than the eurozone crisis.

Of course he’s referring to the debt ceiling fight, which is coming closer and closer to the wire.

Cable made the comments on BBC, according to The Guardian, and really, it’s hard to argue with him, given that leaders of different countries in Europe have had an easier time solving their differences than politicians within one country in the US.

This is consistent with previous comments from abroad regarding this matter. German papers have been slamming the Republicans for basically being dangerous maniacs on this issue.
