Gov’t: Health tab to hit $4.6 trillion in 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s health care tab is on track to hit $4.6 trillion in 2020, accounting for about $1 of every $5 in the economy, government number crunchers estimate in a report out Thursday.

How much is that? Including government and private money, health care spending in 2020 will average $13,710 for every man, woman and child, says Medicare’s Office of the Actuary.

By comparison, U.S. health care spending this year is projected to top $2.7 trillion, or about $8,650 per capita, roughly $1 of $6 in the economy. Most of that spending is for care for the sickest people.

The report from Medicare economists and statisticians is an annual barometer of a trend that many experts say is unsustainable but doesn’t seem to be slowing down. A Read more…

Staff at Speke’s Shop Direct rise to challenge to help heroes

STAFF at Speke online retailer Shop Direct, including chief executive Mark Newton-Jones, have raised more than £15,000 to help UK military personnel.

They completed the gruelling Three Peaks challenge, scaling mountains in England, Scotland and Wales, in 24 hours.

Eleven senior managers and staff were joined by nine Royal Marines and more than 30 other Shop Direct staff in their task.

The proceeds are for Help for Heroes, which aids servicemen and women wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq, and Commando 999, which supports Royal Marines and their families.

Mr Newton-Jones said: “Help for Heroes and Commando 999 are two incredibly deserving causes and I had no problem persuading my colleagues to join me for what promised to be a challenging and inspirational 24 hours.

“While the challenge was an immense test we continually reminded ourselves our endeavours pale into insignificance compared to the sacrifices servicemen and others like them have made during recent years.”

U-Haul plans to fight Johnson City over condemned property

Phoenix-based AMERCO Real Estate Co., U-Haul’s parent company, wants its downtown Johnson City business to stay right where it is, despite the city’s recent condemnation of the property.

“There’s not much the city can do that’s going to make us happy,” Joanne Fried, U-Haul International public relations director, said Monday. “We will fight the condemnation process. We don’t want this to go to court, but we’ve done this before.”

AMERCO President Carlos Vizcarra has talked with City Manager Pete Peterson and expressed his desire to stay at the current location and that remodeling work at the property was forthcoming, Fried said.
