Shanghai Expo latest – Liverpool’s Chinatown in line for massive regeneration

Mark Thomas and Andrew Campbell report on developments at the Shanghai Expo 2010

A NEW museum is at the heart of a massive development being planned for Liverpool’s historic Chinatown.

Sources said talks on the project – which could cost hundreds of millions of pounds – were at an advanced stage.

It is understood the development would also include a hotel complex, as well as a new Chinese Cultural Museum.

Chinese property developer Dr Lee Kai Hung has confirmed he was heavily involved in the project – dubbed “China Square” – which would regenerate a large area close to the city centre.

Liverpool’s Chinatown is the oldest Chinese community in the UK, and includes the landmark Scandinavian hotel.

A well-known North West developer is believed to be involved in the project.

To some fans, a blackout is more of a gray area

Whether it’s a pirated feed from a black market Internet site or a device that lets them watch TV on their computer, NFL fans across the country are getting around the TV blackout.

The rate of NFL blackouts, triggered when a game does not sell out within 72 hours of kickoff, is rising. Those games cannot be aired anywhere within a 75-mile radius of the game.

Slow ticket sales have caused teams in Tampa, Jacksonville, Oakland and San Diego to endure blackouts, which experts suggest are caused by high ticket prices and a dismal economy.

But resourceful fans are challenging the NFL’s rules with alternatives — both legal and illegal.

Of course, fans can go to Raymond James Stadium and buy a ticket, or drive outside the 75-mile radius to bars or parties in Port Charlotte or Fort Myers.

Others, though, are turning to the Web, where half a dozen Web sites offer free live TV programs and sporting events.

The sites allow viewers to catch out-of-market signals on their computer, though the reception is often fuzzy, the telecasts are slow to load and sometimes the site disappears altogether when overwhelmed with users.

Plus, experts say the sites are technically illegal and violate copyright laws.

Why most Kiwi businesses won’t turn their good ideas into world class commercial results

I’m sure that we have all wondered at some stage – “How can kiwis be so inventive and work so long and hard yet our productivity, profitability and national prosperity is at best mediocre?” (See for the NZ Institute’s Report Card). A nation as innovative as we think we are should be a world class economic performer. That we aren’t is a perplexing puzzle – one that is maybe starting to paralyse our thinking.

Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. He also said you cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it. Yet we’ve bee

More pain ahead for victims of Sarasota Ponzi scheme

Now, a federal bankruptcy court trustee claims Boccio was unjustly enriched by the Ponzi when he received monthly payments totaling $64,500.

“If I have a net loss of $170,000,” said Boccio, who lives in Lakewood Ranch. “How was I enriched?”

Diamond’s $37 million Ponzi may look small compared to that of Lou Pearlman of Back Street Boys fame, the Orlando man who stole more than $300 million from his victims. And Fort Lauderdale lawyer Scott Rothstein is serving 50 years while his victims nurse $1.4 billion in financial wounds.

But for the victims, the size of the Ponzi does not really matter. Their savings are still gone forever.

Liverpool hotel group Centre Island hotel breaks even in ‘toughest ever’ year

CENTRE Island Hotels made “good progress” after a period of adjustments to its portfolio.

The Liverpool-based group operates eight UK hotels and four in the Republic of Ireland.

These include the Crowne Plaza Liverpool, Holiday Inn hotels in Liverpool and Cheshire Oaks, Holiday Inn Express at Albert Dock and boutique hotel 62 Castle Street.

It made a marginal loss of £90,000 on a turnover of £42.3m in the 16 months to December, 2009.

Annualised sales were up 7%, although this includes the Crowne Plaza Manchester, which opened in August, 2008, just two days before the accounting period began, and the renovated Crowne Plaza Birmingham, which reopened in October, 2008.

Centre Island also owned the Holiday Inn Express at Liverpool John Lennon Airport during the financial period, although sold it last month to Peel Leisure, part of the group which co-owns the airport.

The group’s strategy is now focused on large town centre and city centre hotel developments.

It’s time to dust off your brain and heart

Have you ever wondered why businesses frequently change their logos, decor and uniforms. What was wrong with the old look? Everyone knew who they were and what they did. Why the need to change?

It’s like the supermarkets – they are always changing where they have things in the aisles and moving products about – how annoying it all seems.

Well, there is a reason to all this seeming madness.

They do it to create excitement and ENERGY. To get the audience re-energised and looking again in their space.

Retailers change their windows at least every two weeks (or they should be) to ensure that people keep looking in their direction.

These new looks can create news and sometimes controversy. All t
