Longmynd Hotel for sale for £1.75 million

The retirement of the long-term owners of the established Shropshire Hills hotel, the Longmynd Hotel, is presenting a lucrative opportunity prospective buyers with experience of running medium- to large-scale hotels.

The family-run hotel – which has been run by the Chapman family since the late 1970s – has been put on the market with a price tag of a cool £1.75 million.

The three-star hotel, which is located not far from the village of Church Stretton, boasts an impressive array of amenities, based around 50 en-suite bedrooms and eight self-catering lodges. Women Entrepreneurs from Around the World Gather in Rio

Buzz is like pornography. It’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it (well, hear it). Last week I was in Rio de Janeiro, courtesy of Dell Computers, which gathered about 150 women entrepreneurs and journalists for their second annual Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network (DWEN) event. For two days the noise level (and I mean that in the best sense of the word) was high, the conversations went deep, and the connections were instant.

New Economist Big Mac Index Says Yuan Is Almost At Correct Value Against The Dollar

The Economist uses the Big Mac Index to see if currencies are at the right level. Its based on this theory called purchasing-power parity- the idea that over time exchange rates should move towards the rate that would equalize the prices of a basket of goods and services around the world.

In this edition of the Big Mac Index, they’ve found that a Chinese Big Mac is 44% cheaper than an American one. That’s natural, as China is poorer than the U.S.. In fact, The Economist thinks that’s about where it should be.

Also, the chart below shows us that there’s a strong relationship between the price of a Big Mac and a country’s GDP per person. Read more…

Carphone Warehouse hails ‘satisfactory’ start to its year

PHONE and electrical goods group Carphone Warehouse today said it is well placed to capitalise on improving markets, in a trading update for the first quarter.

The business, which earlier this year demerged from its TalkTalk phone division, operates as Carphone Warehouse Europe , Best Buy in a joint venture with the US pone and stores chain, and as a partner in Virgin Mobile France.

It revealed today that CPW’s three month like-for-like sales were 3.3% down at £756m, due to a shift from 18 month to 24 month contracts, while sales growth across the rest of Europe was “positive”.

Best Buy saw connections continue at its US stores, growing 12.3% to 1.6m, and a 28% increase in like-for-like sales.

Its UK store expansion is on hold while the group assesses its options. Aintre
