Smart business owners always look for opportunities to reduce unnecessary costs. Learn what costs to cut – or not to cut.

CRM tools have been around forever. But the tools are evolving rapidly and in many ways redefining the boundaries of what CRM is. The latest market changes require a much broader community approach to building relationships with clients.

Today’s CRM tools are online and they include social data as standard aspects of every record. They also include a comprehensive view of the client relationship, including project management, collaboration and even billing.

My dad had a file box full of handwritten ledgers detailing everything he knew about his biggest customers, including when they ordered. T

Pub price drops further

A local village pub in the Sussex village of Westfield has seen its guide price slashed considerably since it was first launched onto the market in Autumn of 2011.

The Old Courthouse, located in Main Road, was initially given a guide of £325,000 in September. However, this was later dropped to £299,950, and again to £289,000 as the owners struggled to move the business on.

According to reports from the Hastings Observer, the problems with the sale are in spite of the pub’s popularity. Nick Earee from Fleurets Southern office, told the paper: “This lovely village pub is an excellent example of a traditional real-ale house, which have become extremely popular in recent times.”

The establishment is set over three storeys and offers a main bar area with tables and chairs, games facilities, and a traditional open fire. There

The Sacramento Bee:

The number of women obtaining patents has grown at an accelerating rate over the past 35 years and in numbers considerably higher than previously reported, a new study commissioned by the National Womens Business Council (NWBC) has found.

The largest spike came in 2010, when 22,984 patents were granted to women, a 35 percent jump over the previous year, according to the NWBC study. In 2009, women received 17,061 patents, a 4.5 percent increase over the 16,321 issued in 2008.

The details are part of the preliminary findings from an extensive review of patents granted between 1975 and 2010 by the U.S. Patents and Trademarks Office.

Most Small Businesses Don’t Use Social Media. Big Mistake.

From the buzz it generates, you’d think almost all small business owners would be actively involved in social media. But you’d be wrong.

This disconnect becomes clear in the latest Small Business Success Index survey conducted twice a year by Network Solutions (disclosure: they’re a client of mine) and the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. While the SBSI showed an “almost universal awareness among small business owners of Facebook and Twitter” only 27 percent of the entrepreneurs used Facebook for business purposes, and a mere 7 percent were Twitter users. Linked In garnered 18 percent.

Despite the tepid survey results, Network Solutions is a big believer in the power social media has to impact business.

Lessons In Leadership From Andy Bernard Of The Office

Underdogs inspire us. That’s the lesson Robert California, the fictional owner of the fictional paper vendor Dunder Mifflin, teaches us when he promotes Andy Bernard to branch manager of the Scranton sales office (aka The Office). Despite his Ivy League credentials, Andy is an unlikely choice to replace the departing Michael Scott. Watching Andy navigate his new accountabilities in the episode entitled “The Incentive” prompted me to consider how a less-than-perfect leader can inspire people.

In the show, Robert charges the Scranton team with doubling sales growth in order to capitalize on increasing demand for personalized service. As man Read more…
