SABIC recalling 40 workers

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. SABIC Innovative Plastics has announced it will recall 40 production workers. It is the company’s second recall this year.

“(On Thursday), we notified our employees the Mount Vernon site is recalling approximately 40 nonexempt employees to fill open positions due to natural attrition as well as a slight increase in volume in certain businesses on site,” said Sheila Naab, site communications leader for the Mount Vernon, Ind., plant. “This recall is in addition to the 20 recalls we announced to our employees in January, totaling 60 recalls for the site.”

Naab said the company hopes to have the workers being notified now back at work in April.

“We took a thoughtful approach to address openings resulting from employees leaving the company over the past year due to retirements and other reasons. We didn’t fill a position just because someone left the company,” Naab said.

“We took a hard look at customer demand and all factors that could determine our staffing needs. With the attrition and a slight increase in demand, we are at a point where we are able to recall employees back to work. We’re grateful we can bring our employees back into the workforce, and help the local economy.”

In January, SABIC recalled 20 workers, who are already back at work.

In February 2009, SABIC announced it would be laying off 100 to 125 employees in March 2009, but offered a retirement bonus to many workers.

“As a result,” Naab said, “we were able to reduce our layoffs to 79 employees.”

General Electric Co. completed the sale of its plastics business to Saudi Basic Industries Corp. in August 2007.

SABIC, a producer of petrochemicals with a presence in more than 100 countries, paid $11.6 billion.

The Mount Vernon plant, which opened in 1960, was one of 60 sites throughout the world that were involved in the deal. The plant is known for producing Lexan, which is used in automobile dashboards, prison windows, boats and compact discs.

SABIC employs about 1,100 workers, Naab said.
