Running A Shop? Then Where’s The Stock?

I’ve been shopping today.

I hate shopping. I mean I really, really hate shopping. Especially if it’s for computer related stuff and today I was shopping for a new small laptop/large netbook.

I hate it because I know some relatively clueless shop assistant will try to “help” me. Despite me telling them I don’t want any help they’ll ask questions like:

  • Is this your first laptop?
  • What will you use it for?
  • What are you going to do about anti-virus protection?
  • What colour are you after?

When all I want them to do is stop the annoying screen saver they run so I can start notepad and try the laptop out.

I would have avoided “shopping” if I could, but I really wanted to physically touch the laptops, because I’m not after anything flash performance wise, just something small with a nice keyboard that I’ll be comfortable typing on for several hours per day whilst away from my desk. If it wasn’t for wanting to try the keyboards I’d have just brought one online.

Anyway, despite the annoying “help” I found a few I liked. A couple of Toshiba laptops and an Acer one. So off I sent the sales assistant to do something useful – get me one. Several minutes later he returns to tell me they don’t have any of them in stock. Not to worry they’re getting a delivery later today, so off he runs again. Nope none coming in that delivery. Perhaps the other local stores – nope non there either.

So I’m stood there a bit puzzled, they’ve spent money on marketing to get me in to the shop. They’ve spent money putting stock on the shelves to demo it and paying a shop assistant to spend 30 minutes “selling” it to me, but when I actually want to buy they don’t actually have anything to sell me. Why?

So if you run a shop, or you’re thinking of opening a shop, please don’t waste your money or my time getting me to “shop” with you if you’re not actually going to stock what you’ve sold me on buying!

Especially if you’re going to sell computers as a quick Google search when I got home resulted in me finding a newer, better version of the same laptop for £50 less on Amazon. All this retailer has done is make a sale for Amazon.
