HENDERSON, Ky. The new River View Mine in Union County, Ky., will be brought up to full production to help make up for production that will be lost by the temporary closure of a sister mine in Illinois because of a conveyor problem, parent company Alliance Resource Partners L.P. announced Monday.
Alliance had put six continuous mining units into operation at River View, but had announced it would hold off on the final two units until market conditions warranted.
The company has said River View would employ 600 people when at full production.
Alliance didn’t indicate Monday when units 7 and 8 will be activated at the mine, located outside Uniontown.
However, the company has at times shifted miners from one mine to another mine in the Illinois basin, so it might be able to move Pattiki manpower and equipment to River View to boost production quickly.
Alliance was forced to idle its Pattiki mine near Carmi in White County, Ill., on Thursday morning because of the failure of the vertical conveyor belt system used in conveying raw coal out of the Pattiki mine. It said there were no injuries associated with the event.
Alliance’s White County Coal subsidiary has begun repairs but is unable to estimate a completion date. The availability of materials and equipment is a key issue, it said.
By boosting production at River View and other mines in the region, Alliance said it expects the Pattiki shutdown won’t have a material adverse effect on the company.
