India Faces Tricky Economic Decisions

India is posting a strong recovery from the economic recession. However, as the annual budget approaches, inflation is rising sharply and there is growing pressure to withdraw the stimulus measures taken over the last two years.

India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 16.8% year-on-year in December, the fastest rate in a single month for 20 years. The figure reflects the extent to which December 2008 was a particularly bad month, at the bottom of the recession. Yet the rise confirms a strong upward trend dating back to the summer of 2009. The consolidated increase in the IIP from April to December 2009 was 9% year-on-year, and October and November also recorded double-digit rises. Indian industry is thriving, to the wider benefit of an economy which is expected to grow by 7-7.5% in fiscal 2009-10.

A Universally Recognized Product

As one of the most recognized products in the world, “Coca-Cola” has been a part of the national and global culture for well over a century. Donation Deadline Approaches for Haiti Earthquake Relief

Anyone wishing to claim their donations for Haitian Earthquake Relief on their 2009 tax return must make those donations by the end of this week. Individuals and corporations have until midnight on Sunday, February 28th, to make cash contributions to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti. These contributions can be claimed on either a 2009 or 2010 return, but not both. Contributions made after that date but before the end of the year can only be claimed on a 2010 return.

Contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card qualify for this special option. Donations charged to a credit card before the end of February count for 2009. This is true even if the credit card bill is not paid until after February 28th.

How to Get Government Grants for Training

Government funding is often available to help small companies train employees and develop work skills. While some funds come as grants, much of it gets allocated to states or local work-force boards which decide what industries and areas to support. The trick is to identify programs aimed at your region or industry.

Start at the federal level. Representatives at the U.S. Department of Labor’s Business Relations Group will work with you to identify programs you could use. Tell them what industry you’re in and what you’re hoping to accomplish with worker training. They know about programs in the works and can put you on lists to be notified about future opportunities.

State economic-development agencies also offer training assistance, grants and tax credits. Such agencies don’t always have similar names, so when searching online for those in your state, try a variety of keyphrases.

Contact your local community college and public university. Government agencies often dole out money to colleges and universities, which, in turn, run training programs. They help you with your grant application, if one is needed, so don’t let a lack of experience in grant-writing stop you.

Across the U.S., work-force boards, run by local appointees and volunteers, help coordinate federal, state and local employment programs.

In addition, One-Stop Career Centers — offices designed as one-stop shops for both employers and workers to get information about the job market and economic development — can help put employers and workers together. There are more than 3,200 centers where you can research training programs and access databases of workers.

Toyota hit with grand jury subpoena

Toyota (TM) has recalled more than 8 million vehicles related to possible unintended acceleration. The 2010 Toyota Prius was the subject of a separate recall involving problems with its brakes.

The federal grand jury subpoena was from the Southern District of New York. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District declined to comment on the matter, saying “It is our office’s policy to neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.”

Toyota intends to cooperate with the investigations, the automaker said in its filing.

Windows 7 The Definitive Guide

Windows 7: The Definitive Guide by William R. Stanek is an excellent guide to the latest and greatest version of Microsoft Windows. It is well written, well organized, and chock full of useful advice, tips, and tricks for getting the most out of Windows 7.

Something for Everyone

Although not a “Windows 7 for Beginners” book, Windows 7: The Definitive Guide does cover a lot of the basics of Windows 7, making this Windows 7 manual appeal to a broad range of users. The general assumption is that the user has a basic familiarity with prior versions of Windows. As a user who did not upgrade to Windows Vista (and from what I hear I am far from alone in this regard) it is especially useful in that it does an excellent job of covering the substantial differences between Windows 7 and Windows XP, as well as Vista.
